And while students do get waitlisted, it’s really tough to get off the Carnegie Mellon waitlist. All waitlists are hard to get off. News & World Report , Carnegie Mellon is one of the top 10 hardest schools in America to get off the waitlist. And unsurprisingly, the odds of getting off that waitlist seem to be better.

That same year, in the spring of 2023, Pomona offered a spot on the waitlist to 845 students — even more than they accepted. As far as waitlists go, these aren’t terrible odds.

In 2022, 3,443 students were offered a spot on the waitlist, and 2,358 students accepted their spot on the waitlist, and JHU admitted none of them.

That said, waitlists aren’t really something that can be counted on to be standard from year to year, so it’s hard to track trends.

Thankfully, CMC actually shares their waitlist data, so we know that in 2022, 850 students were offered a spot on their waitlist. Out of those 850, 538 accepted spots on the waitlist.

In the 2022-2023 Common Data Set, they went so far as to omit the waitlist numbers from the reporting form, even though comparable highly-selective schools share them. The waitlist, though, has shown the opposite trend. Prior to COVID, it was normal for Williams to accept a few dozen students off of the waitlist each year. In the 2021-2022 application cycle, Williams waitlisted 2,241 students (or 14.6% You don’t even need to rush deciding if you want to be on the waitlist at all.

What you might not know yet, though, are the in’s and out’s of the Cornell waitlist. The Cornell waitlist is historically massive. In the 2022-23 application cycle, 5,168 applicants were accepted and 7,729 were offered a spot on the waitlist. Of that group, 5,531 accepted a spot on the waitlist.
