When the pandemic began, nearly all colleges and universities in the United States dropped their testing requirements when it became impossible for students in some areas of the country to find a test center and date reliably. Then, as the pandemic continued, many colleges extended their policies for another year or longer. Initially, however, it seemed like the Ivy League was eager to return to requiring test scores.

Deferring admission (sometimes referred to as deferring enrollment) is the process of choosing a college to attend and postponing the start date for a semester or a year. The college agrees to hold the student’s place in the following year’s freshmen class and the student agrees (by paying a deposit) to attend the college the following year. The average cost of tuition and fees for the 2021-2022 school year is $43,775 at private colleges, $28,238 for out-of-state students at public schools and $11,631 for state residents at public schools. Discuss the facts with your spouse, child and anyone else who has a say. The only thing more devastating than a student not being admitted to their favorite school is being admitted and realizing it makes zero financial sense.

What to do when you have been deferred from your ED or EA college? First, if you found out in December, take a couple of weeks to think about whether this is still a college you would like to attend. If you find out in late January or February, please email them back asap, as you will not have much time before they consider you in the regular admissions round.

It’s True: The SAT Is Going Digital. Here’s What That Means for You: The College Board announced today that it will be moving the SAT to a digital, adaptive format. We’re not surprised– it’s been three years since the College Board released a new set of test prep books/Khan Academy resources, and in the meantime, its primary competitor, the ACT, has updated its testing options with superscoring and plans for digital test taking (though the pandemic delayed the ACT’s digital rollout).
