While the focus this time of year seems to be all about freshman admission, February is the time of year when we receive a majority of our transfer applications and our Evaluation Team begins to work on our transfer reviews, posting credit for work and helping students with any transfer issues.

The California Community College system has a transfer program with 39 HBCUs across the country. California Community College graduates attending historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will now be eligible for a financial grant from the state thanks to a new law recently signed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Over half of students (55%) would consider transferring if their college were to abolish diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. Hispanic and Latino/a students (60%) and Black students (59%) are most likely to say they would consider transferring compared to white students (52%) and students of other races (54%).

There are a lot of myths about transferring colleges. Over the past few years, Yale has gained a reputation as an Ivy League institution that’s open to taking transfer students from less pedigreed backgrounds, especially community colleges. There were only 34 transfer students in 2019. The transfer acceptance rate is under 2%.
