Students applying in fall 2025 must submit SAT or ACT scores, while those applying this fall are encouraged to do so. Beginning in fall 2025, students applying to the university's Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and Whiting School of Engineering will be required to submit either SAT or ACT scores.

We have gone from roughly 11,000 EA applicants in 2014 to almost 27,000 EA applicants this year, and we expect the overall applicant pool (EA and RD together) to show similar growth. The academic caliber of students—measured by ACT/SAT test scores and GPA—has risen. Retention is up 9 points to 74 percent.

USA Today reported that from 1998 to 2016, average high school GPAs rose from 3.27 to 3.38, but average SAT scores fell from 1026 to 1002. And, Drew Riley, Director of Admission at Denison University, explained that the admissions office can see the GPA of every student who has applied from a particular high school.
