National Merit Scholarships are awarded to a select group of students among the top 1% of PSAT scores. The application process for becoming a National Merit Scholar is rigorous, and the winners come only from the top 1% of scorers who took the PSAT during their junior year of high school. This is a great thing.

It is a huge advantage for most colleges to not require test scores– it increases the number of applications, thereby driving up selectivity, and allows colleges to shape the class exactly the way they want without regard to test scores. Note that if your score is too low for the program (or you just aren’t happy with it), you can retest once per academic year. While it is true that not all colleges require ACT or SAT test scores anymore, do yourself a favor and take them anyways. If you score well, it will be a great supplement to your application. If you don’t do so hot, you don’t have to inform your prospective college about the score. But don’t let a low score get you down.

TESTING PRACTICE AND PREP FOR THE PSAT: You take it in October, and it helps you qualify for National Merit if you score high enough. PRACTICE AND PREP FOR THE ACT and SAT: Take a couple of practice tests and see which one feels better to you and which one you score higher on. Then move forward with that one. Go outside.
