Forbes magazine recently came out with a list of schools that were considered to be a Public Ivy. The story also covered private institutions that were considered to be ‘New Ivies’. However, since I have written about my own definition of a Public Ivy before, I’ll stick to the public colleges for this story.

A new documentary, "Exclusion U," claims Ivy League colleges hoard wealth and stubbornly remain exclusive. The eight schools receive public funding and tax breaks but fail to adequately support their communities, the film argues. The film calls on the Ivies to expand enrollments and support their communities.

Since the 1950s, Ivy League schools have been using a secret ranking formula called the Academic Index (AI). The Academic Index was designed specifically to regulate athletic recruitment (in the Ivy League colleges, 15-20% of the first-year class is made up of recruited athletes for their sports teams).

Recruited athletes at selective Division I and III colleges are more likely to be white and come from wealthy families. In a potentially post-affirmative action world, athletic recruitment would hamper efforts to promote diversity. As acceptance rates plummet below 5% at the top schools, recruited athletes have it far easier.
