What should high school students do in the summer? There is a lot of anxiety around this question, so let’s frame it with our objectives. There are always two questions in play: 1) What should I do for my personal development? 2) What will help me look attractive to colleges? I urge all my students to think about pursuits first from a personal development perspective and second from a college admissions perspective.

Many of my videos point the finger at top 50 universities, but less selective institutions also add madness to the system. Debates about the SAT and going test-optional are the hot topic right now, but less discussed are other recommend or optional items like essays and recommendation letters.

In January, College Board announced that the SAT would officially go digital! Starting in spring of 2024, all students will transition over to the new digital SAT. Piloted in November 2021, the initial reactions to the digital SAT have been overwhelmingly positive; approximately 80% of students reported that it felt less stressful and 100% of educators said they had a positive experience.
