One of the most-oft questions I get from families is some version of this: “Which is more important — grades or extracurricular activities? Grades are more important than your extracurricular activities. Many students, however, would prefer to believe that the grades on their transcripts don’t matter much.

In addition to the usual application materials, like transcripts, letters of recommendation, and essays, students are often asked to submit standardized test scores from either the SAT or ACT exam when applying to college. SAT/ACT scores are used by colleges to try and standardize students across the country.

The University of California reached a settlement with students to eliminate SAT and ACT scores from admissions decisions. Now, SAT and ACT scores will only be used to fulfill the English subject-matter requirement, course placement or advising for admitted students.

SAT and SAT Subject Tests. The College Board has now canceled the May and June SAT and SAT Subject Test administrations. The test will now be offered every month in the fall and in the event schools do not reopen in the fall they are preparing to release an “E-SAT” that can potentially be taken at home.
