I particularly think about the two conceptions of college counseling at this time of year. Later this week my school will hold commencement exercises marking the end of each senior’s high school journey. At the same time, this time of year can easily deteriorate into seeing college choices as public relations opportunities.

They have rigorous standards, decline more requests than they accept, and submit comparatively few letters. He makes the obvious point that students attending small college preparatory schools will receive more thoughtful letters from staff who know them better than their public-school peers.
