Next up in our series highlighting early round acceptance rates at top colleges is Emory University — a top 25 university with its largest campus in Atlanta, Georgia. Emory was founded in 1836 and is home to four undergraduate colleges with more than 8,100 undergraduate students. Emory is known for its unique residential college for first-year and sophomore students, Oxford Campus, located 45 minutes east of Atlanta.

Emory University accepted 345 Early Decision II applicants to the Class of 2028 on Feb. 7, 2024. Emory College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS) admitted 267 students for a 12% acceptance rate and Oxford College admitted 139 students for an 11% acceptance rate.
Emory continued its test-optional policy this year and reported that 29% of ECAS applicants and 33% of Oxford applicants did not submit test scores. Emory announced last month that it would remain test-optional for the Class of 2029 but has yet to make a decision on a long-term policy.
“What we saw when we became test-optional was a bigger, more diverse applicant pool,” Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Admission John Latting said. “It is reasonable to invite students to submit scores but to stop short of signaling that it is of critical importance.”
Emory admitted 865 Binding Early Decision I (ED1) applicants for an acceptance rate of 32%. ECAS admitted 705 students and Oxford admitted 364 students on Dec. 13, 2023, with 205 of those students being admitted to both campuses. 39% of admitted students did not submit test scores.
“This year, I am struck by remarkably strong academic preparation of the admitted Emory Early Decision I class; these students have worked hard in challenging classes, engaged with their teachers and classmates, and really succeeded in that context,” Latting said. “They are ready to move onward and upward and thrive in Emory’s classrooms.”
Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Affirmative Action this summer, Emory added new essay prompts to the Class of 2028 application aimed at understanding students’ cultural backgrounds. There are six questions for applicants to choose from, none of which explicitly mention race.
Emory admitted its first members of the Class of 2028 on Dec. 1, 2023, matching 85 students through the QuestBridge National Match program, with 77 to begin at ECAS and eight to begin at Oxford.
Regular Decision applicants can expect to hear from Emory by April 1.
TTA Takeaway: Before applying to Emory University, spend time researching its undergraduate programs — especially the differences between its two campuses. While applicants can select either or both campuses, it’s critical to have compelling reasons for your choice. Students who begin at the Oxford campus are guaranteed enrollment at Emory for their junior and senior year, as long as they have completed the requirements at Oxford. The Oxford campus offers a more intimate, liberal arts environment for first-years and sophomores, as there are no upperclassmen on this campus. Underclassmen at the Emory campus, on the other hand, co-exist in a larger urban setting with upperclassmen and graduate students.
