West Virginia Scholarships

Some of the deadlines may be from prior years. Scholarship deadlines are cyclical, so even if a deadline has passed, the website will likely be updated for the 2023-24 cycle. January

February

This scholarship is for full-time students who have a family member who currently or previously worked in the coal industry in southern West Virginia. The family member must have worked for a company engaged in the mining and processing of coal and located in one of the following West Virginia counties: Boone, Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Clay, Fayette, Greenbrier, Jackson, Kanawha, Lincoln, Logan, Mason, McDowell, Mercer, Mingo, Monroe, Nicholas, Pocahontas, Putnam, Raleigh, Randolph, Roane, Summers, Wayne, Webster, or Wyoming. This scholarship supports fellows’ graduate or undergraduate study at an accredited institution based in the United States. Grants are typically $5,000 to $7,000 and may be renewed for subsequent years. Preference is given to candidates who reside in or attend schools in these states: Connecticut, District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia. The awards $10,000 per year for up to four undergraduate years or completion of a bachelor’s degree – whichever comes first. Must have a minimum high school GPA of 3.80 and graduate from a West Virginia high school or have been home-schooled for at least their senior year in West Virginia. Deadline is February 12th. This covers cost of attendance as determined by Student Financial Services for up to four undergraduate years or completion of a bachelor’s degree – whichever comes first, plus a one-time $4,500 stipend for study abroad or academic enhancement. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.80 and graduate from a West Virginia high school or have been home-schooled for at least their senior year in West Virginia. Deadline to apply is February 12th. March

The scholarship is a student financial aid program designed to enable and encourage academically talented individuals to pursue careers in the fields of engineering, science, and technology in West Virginia. A 3.0 GPA is required and the student must Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an engineering, science, or technology program leading to a certificate or an associate or bachelor’s degree at an eligible institution of higher education. This  offers various awards for incoming students who have been accepted into West Virginia Wesleyan College. The scholarship is automatically applied after submitting an application. Deadline to submit is March 1st. Read more here.

The scholarship awards up to $3,000 of financial aid to several outstanding chemistry students, and may be renewed for up to four years of full-time study provided that the student continues to fulfill chemistry major requirements, maintains a minimum 3.5 GPA in the chemistry major and maintains a 3.25 overall GPA. Deadline is March 1st. Apply here.

 Provides a $5,000 per year ($2,500 per semester) scholarship to current high school seniors who are children or grandchildren of 1) Mylan Pharmaceuticals employees who were employed full-time at the Morgantown, West Virginia location as of December 11, 2020, or retired full-time employees of Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Morgantown, West Virginia location. Recipients must be enrolled in a four-year undergraduate degree program and demonstrate high academic promise by achieving and maintaining a 3.2 overall GPA for all years that the scholarship is received. April

Provides an opportunity for students in grades 9-12 from Hampshire and Morgan Counties for hands-on experience in STEAM-based subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math). The estimated award is $2,000. Deadline is April 1st. Apply here.

WV Invests Grant is a state-funded grant program that pays toward the full cost of basic tuition, mandatory fees and academic program fees for select certificate and associate degree programs at a West Virginia public two- or four-year institution. Students must complete their FAFSA application to be eligible. Deadline is April 15th. More info here.

 

The scholarship will be awarded in the form of a waiver for tuition and fees associated with attendance at Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College (excluded are the following fees:  book, online fees, lab, and other student fees) for one academic year, with a review after the first semester before renewal. Students must be 23 or younger and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. Deadline is April 26th. Read more here.

May

The scholarship is a merit-based financial aid program for West Virginia high school graduates planning to attend one of the state’s public or independent two- or four-year institutions. The Promise Scholarship will pay $5,200 per year or the cost of tuition and mandatory fees, whichever is less, at any eligible institution. Must have a minimum GPA of 3.0 to be eligible. June

WVU Leadership Scholarship is valued at $500 per academic year (fall and spring) and is awarded to incoming first-time freshmen who have achieved the highest levels of honor or leadership within certain nationally acclaimed organizations. For consideration, students must be incoming freshmen who have a high school GPA of at least 3.0. Deadline is June 1st. More info here.

This scholarship awards $2,000 per year for up to four undergraduate years or completion of a bachelor’s degree – whichever comes first. Students must be accepted to WVU and stay within an academic major offered by the Reed College of Media. Deadline is June 1st. Read more here.

This scholarship awards $3500 to residents who live in one of the three MANTS member states: West Virginia, Virginia, or Maryland. Applicants must be  enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate landscape/horticulture program or related discipline at a two or four year institution. Must also have a minimum grade point average overall of 2.7 based on a scale of 4.0, and a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 in their major. Deadline is June 1st. More info here.

The scholarship awards $2,000 to students who are currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate or graduate ornamental horticulture program or related discipline at a four-year college-level institution. Applicants must be in a junior or senior standing at time of application in a college-level four-year curriculum (having completed the first two years and at least two horticulture courses) or a graduate student standing in a masters or doctoral program. Provides awards of up to $5,000 to assist non-traditional students who are re-entering college with tuition and fee expenses. Applicants must be between 25-50 years of age and be newly matriculating as a freshman, returning to, or transferring to West Virginia University at an undergraduate level and pursuing a first baccalaureate degree. A 2.5 GPA is required. Deadline is June 30th. More info here.

July

This scholarship is a one-time monetary award of $500 to be issued to the highest ranked recipient in each of The American Legion Department of West Virginia nine Districts. An essay is required along with the application. Deadline is July 1st. More info here.

August

The Michael Moore Scholarship will be awarded to the following students qualified to enroll in Early Entrance classes while attending high school in Hardy, Hampshire, or Grant County. Minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Deadline is August 26th. Read more here.

This will be awarded to one returning student of Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The scholarship for $500 will be awarded to the student in the form of a waiver from Eastern’s Foundation to be used for college-related expenses incurred as a result of enrollment at Eastern. Must have a 2.5 GPA or higher. Deadline is August 26th. Read more here.

 

This scholarship will be awarded to five nursing students of Eastern West Virginia Community and Technical College. Each scholarship of $1,000 will be awarded to the students in the form of a waiver from Eastern’s Foundation to be used for tuition and books incurred as a result of enrollment at Eastern. September

This scholarship offers a $2,500 scholarship for students and professionals changing others’ lives through wellness and beauty. This scholarship may be awarded to students of all ages (parental consent required if under 18) as well as prospective students planning to enroll in an eligible program within the next year. The deadline is September 1st. Apply here.

October

The VFW Voice of Democracy Scholarship selects 27,000 high school students to compete for more than $2 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording an audio essay on an annual patriotic theme. Winners receive an all-expense-paid trip to Washington DC, to tour the city, be honored by the VFW and its Auxiliary and receive their portion of $171,000 in national awards, the top scholarship being $35,000. The scholarship is open to students in grades 9-12 who are enrolled in a public, private or parochial high school or home study program. Deadline is October 31st. More info here.

November

December

This scholarship awards $500 to graduating seniors in public high schools in West Virginia. The GPA requirement is a 2.0 and the application must be submitted in 12 point Times New Roman font. Deadline is December 31st. More info here.

This is a competitive scholarship for recent high school graduates with a passion for teaching and a history of high academic achievement, community service, and active involvement in extracurricular activities while in high school. Recipients will receive $10,000 per year for up to four years (up to the cost of tuition and fees, room and board, and other approved educational expenses). In exchange, Underwood-Smith Teaching Scholars must agree to teach in a West Virginia public school in an area of critical need (math, science, elementary education or special education) for a period of five years after graduating from college.
