Next up in our series highlighting early round acceptance rates at top colleges is University of Pennsylvania — an Ivy League institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. UPenn was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1740 and is ranked #6 in National Universities by the U.S. News and World Report.

The University of Pennsylvania did not immediately release the Class of 2028 early acceptance rate, continuing its decision to no longer publicly announce its acceptance rate during the regular decision admissions cycle for the Class of 2026.
Over 8,500 students applied to UPenn through its binding Early Decision program this year, around 500 more than last year. UPenn admits around half of its incoming class through the early round.
It was a tumultuous semester for UPenn — both the President of the university and the Chair of the Board of Trustees resigned within the week prior to the early decision results being released. There have been a number of changes to the admissions process as well, above all, the end of affirmative action this summer by the US Supreme Court.
Additionally, Penn announced the end of its $400 enrollment deposit — which typically signifies an “intent to enroll” at a university — for the Class of 2027 and future accepted classes. An essay prompt unique to each of Penn’s four undergraduate schools was added to the application as well, a transition from the previous single short answer used for all four schools. Standardized test scores remain optional.
At a Board of Trustees meeting earlier this year, Vice Provost and Dean of Admissions Whitney Soule said that Penn received a total of 59,465 applications to the Class of 2027 — a record high — and had an acceptance rate of just 5.8%. For the Class of 2026, Penn’s early decision acceptance rate was 15.6%.
TTA Takeaway: Historically, UPenn has been able to offer more than 90% of applicants an interview with an alumni volunteer, based on availability. During this application cycle, however, UPenn renamed these interviews alumni “conversations” that are “non-evaluative.” Applicants are still “strongly encouraged” to attend these virtual conversations if they are matched with an alum. Regardless of their name, preparing for this opportunity is crucial. Students may opt-out without a disadvantage, but the wording here is vague.
