Beyond the Basics: A College Packing Guide for Parents

Sending your child off to college is an exciting and emotional time. As they embark on this new chapter of their lives, it's only natural for you to want to ensure they have everything they need to thrive.

Before you begin the packing process, it's important to note that many schools provide a packing list specifically tailored to their campus. Be sure to reference this list. In addition to the basics, including these often underrated items will go a long way in helping your child navigate college life with ease and transform their dorm room into a home away from home.

What to Pack

Comfort

  1. Mattress Topper: Dorm room plastic mattresses are known for being less than comfortable. Invest in a quality mattress topper.

  2. Fan: A good fan will make studying and sleeping easier.

Organization

  1. Shower Caddy: Don't overlook the importance of shower caddies. It provides a convenient way to transport toiletries between the dorm and the communal bathroom, keeping essentials organized and accessible.

  2. Under-the-Bed Storage: Dorm rooms are notorious for being small spaces, and sometimes you need to get creative. Utilizing under-the-bed storage and snagging some bed risers can help maximize storage. Keep in mind some campuses already have raised beds, and some don’t allow it, so make sure to reference the school’s packing guide.

  3. Bedside Organizer: Another creative way to help your child maximize their space is using a bedside organizer to keep phones, books, and glasses within arm's reach.

  4. Drawer Organizers: Most dorms come with one set of large drawers. Subdividing drawers keeps them neat.

Cleanliness

  1. Bed Bug Preventer: Bed bugs can be an unwelcome surprise. Include a mattress encasement to protect against potential infestations.

  2. Shower Shoes: most kids wear shower shoes on their trips to and from the bathroom.

Personal Items

Surge Protector Power Strip: Dorm rooms typically have limited power outlets. Equip your child with surge protector power strips to ensure they have enough outlets for all their devices.

Portable Charger: Help your child stay connected on the go with a portable charger that can charge multiple devices simultaneously, such as iPads, laptops, and phones.

Wrinkle-Release Spray: Save your child time and effort by including wrinkle-release spray in their laundry arsenal. Depending on your child, a clothes steamer can also be a good investment.

Lint Roller: Help your child keep their clothes looking clean even if they throw them on the floor with a lint roller.

Laundry Hamper: Think about how far they will have to carry their clothes to the laundry room.

Noise-Canceling Headphones: College can be noisy, but noise-canceling headphones will provide your child with a peaceful study or relaxation environment.

Old Sneakers and an Inexpensive Jacket: These can be useful for college parties, and you can use ones that your child already owns.

What to Leave Behind

Some items are generally not allowed in dorm rooms due to safety concerns. Encourage your child to leave these items at home to comply with regulations and ensure a safe living environment.

  1. Open Flames (candles, incense, matches, lighters)

  2. Toasters

  3. Blenders

  4. Hot Plates

  5. Space Heaters

Dorm rooms have limited space, so it's wise for your child to communicate with their roommate, if possible, to avoid bringing duplicates of shared items.

As your child embarks on their college journey, think beyond the obvious and consider these often-overlooked essentials. The little things can make a big difference.
